On Aug. 5, 2016, SVEC leader Ed Kaminsky passed away at the age of 91 after a long illness. Born in Chicago during the roaring twenties, he graduated from high school and joined the Army to learn a Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge and a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Ruhr. He was married to wife Liz for 63 years and produced 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In addition to a successful career in Silicon Valley, Kaminsky gave back by volunteering for a number of community organizations. He helped future generations find careers in technology. It was an honor to work with him. Our hearts go out to all who were lucky enough to know Ed Kaminski.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 13, 2016 1:00PM at Aquamaids Bingo, 1600 Martin Ave. Santa Clara, CA 95050.

Apr. 25, 2012 SVEC Anderson Emergency Wireless

On April 25, 2012 in Santa Clara at Santa Clara University, the SVEC held its quarterly meeting. Craig Anderson presented “Santa Clara Emergency Wireless Network.” Experts know that another big earthquake is coming and wanted to find a way to keep first responders online. He showed how to build a cheap reliable wireless network for government and public utilities. He is now switching from a non-profit to a for profit strategy to get the technology out to a broader market.

Jerry Pohorsky of the Electric Auto Association talked about an incredible deal for an electric car. The car is a 2011 model called the Th!nk City that is being offered at a fraction of the original $36K sticker price. The bottom line is that if you can take advantage of the $7500 federal tax credit, you can get a new electric car that goes 70 MPH on the freeway for under $15K including all taxes and DMV registration. Mar. 27, 2011 Paul Baran

March 27, 2011 in Los Angeles, Paul Baran died from lung cancer at the age of 84. He was a member of the SVEC Hall of Fame, winner of the Marconi Prize and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

Born in Grodno, Poland, Baran graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1949 and later his master’s degree in electrical engineering from UCLA.

Baran worked for the Rand Corporation in the 1950s developing a command-and-control network that would survive a nuclear attack. He came up with a decentralized system would be held together by scores of small computers. Messages would be broken in small packets and would still get through switching from one surviving node to the next until it was reassembled at the destination. This packet switching was used by the Arpanet and eventually the Internet. The idea of an artificial intelligence network that could withstand anything lives on.

May 4, 2010 SVEC Business of Engineering Meetup

On May 4, 2010 in Sunnyvale SVEC and Ozen Engineering sposored the “Business of Engineering Meetup.” It was a chance for  engineers and entrepreneurs to meet informally and talk about manufacturing, technical training, and sales of engineering hardware or software tools. It was held in what I call the Map Room for obvious reasons and the food was great. This was a funny and smart crowd and I enjoyed networking with them.
