STClogonew1 Molisani Jack

On September 5, 2013 in Dublin at Mimi’s Cafe, the STC East Bay Chapter hosted ProSpring CEO Jack Molisani’s presentation “When Your Ship Comes In.” Molisani talked about short-term tactics and long-term strategies for increasing your value to a company and your own bottom line. He also spoke to me about the upcoming LavaCon running from October 20th to 24th in Portland, Oregon.

Richard Mateosian reminded attendees about the ongoing Touchstone competition‘s call for entrants and judges. I announced that the next STC Silicon Valley chapter meeting will host Oracle’s Marta Rauch on “Google Glass and Augmented Reality.” Next month’s East Bay meeting will be on October 3, 2013 with Lori Meyer  speaking about “The Change Agent in You.”

I also met with new chapter president Romy Sinha and Past President Jane Olivera, STC luminary Gwaltney Mountford. Chapter Treasurer Joseph Humbert showed off his new book “There’s The Rub.”

May 24, 2012 STC Qontext Samir Ghosh

On May 24, 2012 in Santa Clara, STC Silicon Valley Chapter hosted Samir Ghosh of Qontext. He talked about Qontext as a enterprise-grade social collaboration platform for internal use at corporations.

Richard Mateosian presented a check for the chapter’s participation in the the Touchstone competition to chapter treasurer Gillian Flato. DJ Cline and Jennifer Hutton talked about their experiences at the STC Summit in Chicago. Immediate Past President Pat Harvey also dropped by.

Please join us on Thursday, June 28, 2012 for one of our semi-annual schmoozes. This one will take place at the Mountain View Chevy’s, located at 2116 West El Camino Real in Mountain View. This is an opportunity to chat with your chapter officers along with your fellow technical writers. The schmooze starts at 6 PM. Be there!

Sep. 1, 2011 STC Touchstone Competition

Saturday, October 1, 2011 is the deadline for this year’s STC Touchstone competition. Entry forms and detailed entry instructions are at www.stc-touchstone.org

STC Fellow Richard Mateosian says:

“If you have work you’re especially proud of, enter it so your fellow
communicators can admire and recognize it.

If you have work that you’re not quite happy with, enter it to receive the
advice and counsel of our experienced judges.

This competition is sponsored by the six Northern California chapters of
the Society for Technical Communication (STC).  We send the top winners to the STC 2012 Summit Awards competition. Winners of that competition will be announced at the STC Summit in Chicago, May 20-23, 2012.

The proceeds from Touchstone support the Kenneth Gordon Scholarship and other local STC activities.

There is also a call for judges. This year’s Touchstone technical communication competition needs experienced technical communicators to serve as judges.  Details and application forms are at www.stc-touchstone.org.

The judging for this year’s competition begins on Sunday, October 9, 2011.
As usual, we finish before Thanksgiving.

If the balance between judges and entries is as in prior years, you will
volunteer approximately forty hours of work over a six-week period,
working with one or two judging partners to evaluate six to eight entries.

Judging entails both collaboration and individual effort.  Your team
generates consensus award recommendations, but each judge provides a
separate written evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of each entry.

Judging is good for your career.  You work with other experienced technical
communicators on a worthy project, and you have a chance to study some of
the best work in your field. It’s also fun.

Judges receive free admission to the awards event in January, and one judge, in a random drawing, will win up to $250 toward a 2012 STC membership.”

May 17, 2011 STC Fellow Richard Mateosian

On May 17, 2011 in Sacramento at the STC Summit, Richard Mateosian of the STC Silicon Valley Chapter and leader in the Berkeley chapter has been named Fellow. For years he has helped technical communicators get recognition for the work and now it is his turn. Congratulations to Richard and the other new Fellows!

I worked with Richard for years in the hope that a new generation would take charge. Last night it started. The student members fought for their right to fully participate in STC. I think this is a further sign that the old STC is gone and a new generation will build an organization better suited to their needs. The torch is passed, but because it is California, it must happen in a designated area with proper permits. :-)
