Lunar Library

Full disclosure, I am a charter member of the Long Now Foundation. They try to think about how to communicate with future generations, including launching time capsules into space. Last month an Israeli Beresheet lunar lander crashed on the Sea of Serenity. It contained data from Long Now’s PanLex and Rosetta projects in its Lunar Library. It is not the first time they have tried this. One time capsule was placed in Elon Musk’s Tesla and launched into solar orbit back in February of 2018. Also, a Rosetta disk is already on the comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. According to Long Now’s Executive Director Alexander Rose “If the Lunar Library remains intact, then all the analog and digital knowledge contained in the 25 layers currently resides on the Moon, perhaps for hundreds of millions of years to even billions of years.”

Imagine that. Imagine backing up everything you have ever written, every picture you ever took and having it seen a thousand, million or billion years from now. You would get the last word from a lost world.

By the way, this marks the twenty fifth anniversary and third version of this website. That is a lot of content to back up.

Nov. 16, 2017 Jobless Future

On Nov. 16, 2017 The Wall Street Journal’s Vanessa Fuhrmans reported “A Future Without Jobs? Think Again.” “Some entrepreneurs such as Tesla Inc. founder Elon Musk predict so little human work will be left that a universal social safety net will be needed to maintain economic order.” Ben Pring of Cognizant’s Center for the Future of Work estimates 19 million jobs will disappear over the next 15 years.

Jul. 17, 2017 Musk Artificial Intelligence

On Jul. 17, 2017 CNN reported that Elon Musk of Tesla appeared at the National Governor’s Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. He said that artificial intelligence was an existential threat. Robots will do our jobs better. Of course, if we are not working, we will not be able to afford electric cars The irony is that it will take artificial intelligence to develop self driving cars.

Mar. 28 2017 Elon Musk Neuralink

On Mar. 28 2017 CNN announced Elon Musk was forming Neuralink, a medical research company to develop a “neural lace” or symbiotic digital layer to the human brain. The idea is to get around the i/o barrier with a direct cortical interface through veins and arteries to the neurons. Musk thinks artificial intelligence may make humans obsolete and this implant may be away to remain relevant. Otherwise, we may become the equivalent of house cats. Let us hope for a forever home.

Jan. 12, 2015 Wall Street Journal

On Jan. 12, 2015 the Wall Street Journal’s Mike Ramsey wrote “Electric-Car Pioneer Musk Charges Head-On at Detroit” about the way Tesla founder Elon Musk’s runs his car company. “During the launch of Model S production in 2012, Mr. Musk set up an office in the middle of the factory floor in Fremont Calif., and took over when hiccups emerged. He told workers to buy USB cables at nearby Fry’s Electronics Inc. stores after a snarl delayed a shipment from China.”

Gotta love the way Musk solves a problem. I wonder what kind of commission the salesperson at Fry’s got?
