On Thursday, May 10, 2012, in San Francisco at Nixon Peabody, SVForum presented a Clean Tech Breakfast “Market Opportunities for Grid Level Energy Storage.” Khaled Shami of Nixon Peabody moderated panelists Hanns Anders of Claremont Creek Ventures, Lee Burrows of VantagePoint Venture Partners, Gordon Chirdon of NRG Energy and Daidipya Patwa of PG&E. They discussed shifting energy loads, integrating renewables, improving reliability and expanding scalability. Simple solutions that do not require exotic materials or complex technologies are more attractive to utilities. Don’t try to recreate the grid, focus on improving it incrementally.

On Wednesday, May 9, 2012 in Santa Clara at Texas Instruments, the IEEE Communications Society of Santa Clara Valley Chapter (SCV) presented “Mobile Patent Wars.” A powerful panel of legal experts discussed the increasingly complex world of mobile patents, the players and possibly outcomes.

Alan Weissberger of IEEE created the program, specified the topics to be covered, recruited Ken Korea of Samsung and all the speakers.

Ken Korea, Vice President and Chief IP Counsel of Samsung consulted with the speakers, organized gave an overview of the IP litigation issues and moderated the panel session.

Cynthia Bright, Associate General Counsel of HP spoke about NPE patent suits and the AIA.

Colleen Chien, Assistant Professor of Santa Clara University Law Faculty spoke about patent remedies like ITC versus district court.

Tom Lavelle, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Rambus spoke about transferring IP assets to NPE like Micron to RRR, Nokia to Mosaid, or Apple to Digitude.

Josh McGuire, Senior Patent Counsel of Google talked about acquiring patents for protection like CPTN’s acquisition of Novell patents, the Nortel patent auction and Google’s purchase of IBM patents.

Jonathan Wells of AJIS Consulting talked about what all this means for engineers.

Steve Lohr of The New York Times was also covering this event.

We now have every sort of technology available and yet we still have trouble communicating. If you want to say something, say it. If you cannot say it directly or in writing, then maybe it should go unsaid. Without clear communication, how can we know what you are thinking?
