Jun. 15, 2015 STC Andrew Davis Remote Work

STCSVlogo3Davis Andrew copy

On June 15, 2015 in Santa Clara, STC Silicon Chapter hosted Andrew Davis of Synergistech. He discussed how to get remote positions. Basically: be really good, work harder, be a little bit cheaper, more trustworthy and show up in person on a regular basis.  Despite the technology network we are creating, employers want to see people working at their desks. It seems a contradiction as we move to a mobile society. For more details, I strongly recommend visiting his website.

I think there are a couple of factors driving the trend toward remote work. One of them is a rebellion against the open space office. While it may be cheaper to put employees in one big room, the noise and distractions make it difficult to concentrate or think, which is what knowledge workers are paid to do. If a company really wants to save money on square footage they should consider remote work.

Remote work is greener. Spending four hours day driving in traffic or even commuting on public transportation leaves a carbon footprint. Companies might even get a tax break for reducing it. That commute time is also time better spent solving problems.

Remote work promotes a balanced life. Employees can take care of older or younger family members. They can exercise and not need your gym. Oh, a flu epidemic is less likely to spread through your company.

Remote work externalizes operating costs. Employees pay for their own electricity, internet connections, insurance and utilities. They can live in affordable housing and not hipster hamster housing. Depending on where the company operates it might clarify a worker’s contract or full time employee tax status.

Remote work assists outsourcing. Employees can work with outsourced teams in another time zone easier from home if they don’t have to work nine to five on site.

Remote work increases the likelihood of a companys’ survival in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency.

Finally, if a remote position does not work out, it is easier to let someone go.

Aug. 9, 2014 Doug Menuez Fearless Genius

On August 9, 2014 in Mountain View, the Computer History Museum exhibited “Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985-2000.” This collection is just a sample of the 250,000 images taken by photojournalist Doug Menuez taken during that period.

Thirty years ago, Steve Jobs was kicked out of Apple, an organization he had helped build. It did not stop him. He created Next computers. The genius of Steve Jobs was bringing out the genius of others and making the most of it. He recognized the talents of Doug Menuez from his images in newspapers and magazines. Jobs gave him complete access. He did not tell the photographer what cameras to use or who to take pictures of. The result was a series of remarkable historic images capturing the people who changed the world.

Menuez sees a bigger picture from all the little ones. There is a trend from open, inclusive cultures based on sharing to closed, exclusive cultures based on greed and exploitation. Organizations that used to meet in community college classrooms now meet in gated mansions. While this might create jobs in other countries, it does not help most people in America. Without middle class jobs there are few paths to success for the next Steve Jobs.

We owe a debt to people like Menuez who had the foresight to take these images. Imagine if you had an independent photojournalist who was willing to accurately document every important event in your organization. Of course, you would have credit their work and they could make money from the images in magazines etc. but the publicity and legacy it would promote would be worth it.

Real visionaries show us what they see. If history is written by the winners, it is also photographed. This exhibit is an inspiration to archive and display my own collection of Silicon Valley history.

Jun. 3, 2014 SVForum Visionary Awards

On June 3, 2014 at Kelly Porter’s home in Lost Alto Hills, SVForum held its 17th Annual Visionary Awards. Tim Draper of DFJ was introduced by his son Billy Draper of Apartment List. Jessica Jackley of Kiva was introduced by Reza Aslan of AslanMedia. Tim O’Reilly of O’Reilly Media was introduced by Steven Levy of Wired Magazine. Dr. Tina Seelig of Stanford was introduced by Tom Byers of Stanford.

Usually there would be a large numbers of pictures of the event, but I have hit the size limit on this website and will be posting the images on Flickr. Actually SVForum may have its own limits as well. It makes you think about where SVForum started thirty years ago and where it is now.

Seventeen years ago one of the founders named Barbara Cass decided to hold an awards event recognizing leaders in technology. At the height of the dotcom boom, we did not know how unusual it was to have winners like Bill Gates or Steve Wozniak pose for pictures. Because I was an experienced member of the press, Barb Cass asked me to cover the events and take pictures so there would be some sort of historical record. Later when she was dying of cancer she made me promise to continue to cover these events independently, no matter who was in charge, and to post them on my site so people could see them. When you see me at an SVForum event, I am honoring her memory.

I just try to report what I see. SVForum seems to be in a struggle to reinvent itself again. Since 1997, there have been at least three name changes, a couple of mergers and six CEOs of SVForum, three in the past year alone. They moved four times. They had a swanky Redwood City office with easy freeway access and free parking. To cut costs they moved to an old building in downtown San Jose over a pizza joint. They share a few cubicles with other organizations in a open office that is up two flights of stairs with no elevator or reasonable accommodation for the disabled. It is a much more casual environment with a fully functioning bar. Occasionally dogs wander through the aisles and do what dogs do. I am told you get used to it.

I do not know how SVForum will bounce back, but they will. Think of the organization as a Restartup ™. At the award ceremony, Tim O’Reilly talked about Silicon Valley becoming more active in helping the government help people. Along those lines, I saw former CEO Susan Lucas Conwell talking to someone from a government agency with interests in Silicon Valley a few weeks ago.  She told me she supports former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. That may come in handy.

(BTW: After a year, Susan is still looking for a job. If you know of an opportunity, call her. Former interns tell me that working with her is an experience they will ever forget.)

At the award ceremony, the latest CEO Adiba Barney talked about setting up operations in other countries. She also wants to attract younger members, to “coolify” with a new fresh look. With their current headquarters, SVForum could offer lots of talk, pizza, beer and dogs for hipster startups. Some things never change in Silicon Valley.

Whatever happens I will try to cover it. I want to thank the extraordinary volunteers and  increasingly decreasing staff of SVForum. If you see SVForum on their resumes, hire them. Good people do not just cost more, they are priceless. You will miss them when they are gone.

Mar. 17, 2014 STC Tableau Visualizing Data

STCSVlogo3Speaker Our

On Mar. 17, 2014 at the IHOP Restaurant in Santa Clara, STC Silicon Valley Chapter (www.stc-siliconvalley.org/) presented “10 Questions to Keep In Mind When Visualizing Data.” The presentation was given remotely by a nice guy in Pennsylvania, who showed the wonders of Tableau, a game changing application that takes advantage of new big data analytics.

I call this meeting the night I almost bought a karaoke machine. In order to hear the presentation, we needed external speakers. I drove over to the closest Fry’s Electronics store. I was in a hurry and saw a karaoke machine on sale for forty dollars. It would do the job but I kept looking. Fortunately I found a very reasonable set of speakers for ten dollars. The speakers gave off an eerie blue light. Since I could not photograph the human speaker, I decided to photograph the electronic one.

Also on hand were the newly elected chapter officers President David Hovey, Vice President Marta Rauch, Treasurer Gillian Flato and Secretary Tom Johnson. Congratulations!

STCSVlogo3Firestone Rebecca

On Monday, Feb. 24, 2014 in Redwood City at Harry’s Hofbrau, STC Silicon Valley hosted Rebecca Firestone of Zep Solar’s presentation “Challenges When Developing Hardware Documentation for Industrial Design: A Case Study.” Firestone showed the audience how to create a composited document and develop an effective graphical language and style. After trying several different tools and production methods, a combination method evolved: SolidWorks, 3D PDF renderings, Jing, Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and unstructured FrameMaker. She talked about the challenges of converting to topic-based authoring approaches.
