A Covert Affair

Julia Child and Paul Child in the OSS

By Jennet Conant

Conant specializes in WWII espionage, but this book is a stretch. This is supposed to be the story of how Julia and Paul Child met during the war. Most of it is about other people and McCarthyism in the 1950s. Many happy creative people who served their country well were blacklisted and never allowed to practice their chosen professions because of a few hysterical malicious rumormongers. Julia Child and Paul were supposed to disappear and instead became famous. Everybody remembers them for their great works. If the detractors are remembered at all, it is simply as the bad guys. Bon Appetite!
