Mar. 22, 2012 STC Elisa Sawyer Tech Writer Trip To Hollywood

On March 22, 2012 In Santa Clara the STC Silicon Valley Chapter hosted Elisa R. Sawyer’s presentation “A Technical Writer’s Trip to Hollywood.” Sawyer talked about how earning a certificate in screen writing through UCLA Extension improved her technical writing. She was surprised by what she learned and how it relates to information architecture. Technical communicators create topics with accessible content and structure targeting specific audiences. DITA topics are small segments that can build a larger dramatic narrative. Sawyer says “We write love stories for nerds.”

Sawyer’s work points out the growing trend toward short scripted instructional video online. The demand for these additional media skills will only increase if more technical communication goes Hollywood.

Please join us on April 19, 2012 (note the special date) for the April SVC Meeting; to be held at Harry’s Hofbrau, located at 1909 El Camino Real in Redwood City. The meeting starts at 6 PM. This month’s topic is “Photographing the Future: A Retrospective” with DJ Cline.
