Sojourners In The Greater Southwest
By Alex Shoumatoff
Shoumatoff travels through time from the Paleolithic to the present showing how various cultures have built up and exceeded the carrying capacity of the Southwest. I loved the story of Cabeza De Vaca who traveled from Florida to the Pacific in the early 1500s. As the first European to cross North America De Vaca was forever changed by the people he met. Upon return to Spain he urged that the tribes be treated as equals and not exterminated or enslaved. His wisdom was ignored.
Now millions of people are moving into the area from Mexico and the United States and are clueless to the drought that is occurring. Read the book and heed the warning.
I highly recommend this book.
