Toasted Text from DJCline.com

I recently inherited a toaster oven. It was joke but I loathe to throw it away. For those of a certain age, toaster ovens were the favored kitchen appliance by college students before the introduction of cheap microwave ovens. Text from DJCline.com

Fifty years ago, microwave ovens were impractical. They were called radar ranges and you never knew if the Air Force was going to come and take them all away for national defense. They were big, dubiously safe appliances that required degrees in physics and home economics to make popcorn. They had dial controls and egg timers built in. Text from DJCline.com

You couldn’t put a slice of pizza in an ordinary toaster without starting a mozzarella scented bonfire. Toaster ovens were basically a hotplate in a box allowing horizontal heating. Like any appliance they could be dangerous. They are like very hot Easy Bake ovens that can burn your house down. Text from DJCline.com

I never owned one. I laughed when I saw a friend had one of the nicer upscale models. It sat next to an avocado colored crock pot and can opener with a clock radio in a kitchen with Bicentennial wallpaper. The friend passed on and as a last joke left it to me. Text from DJCline.com

Now I think of them when I make a very small batch of cookies. I sit in front of it with a fire extinguisher. Text from DJCline.com
