The title is a play on Adam Smith’s Wealth Of Nations. Landes tries to explain how a civilization’s values create monetary value. It hasn’t been a happy story and I don’t think Landes is any less chauvinistic than the rest of us, but he does have his points. If you want a better world, you should do the following. Invest in education and technology. Reward innovation. Fight poverty and build a more open egalitarian society. Encourage religious tolerance. Emancipate everybody. All of this easier said than done.
