Why Some Are So Rich And Some Are So Poor
By David S. Landes Text from DJCline.com.
The title is a play on Adam Smith’s Wealth Of Nations. Landes tries to explain how a civilization’s values create monetary value. It hasn’t been a happy story and I don’t think Landes is any less chauvinistic than the rest of us, but he does have his points. If you want a better world, you should do the following. Invest in education and technology. Reward innovation. Fight poverty and build a more open egalitarian society. Encourage religious tolerance. Emancipate everybody. All of this easier said than done. A Dark Knight for dark times. The second film in the latest series of Batman films is also a long journey into night, running over two hours. Dr. Zhivago is a great film too, but I was glad when it was over and had no desire to see it again. Text from DJCline.com Read the rest of this entry »

Last year I was at trail head in Oregon. A pick-up truck was parked in the lot with a dog tethered by a leash. It was very hot and there was no one around. The dog was whining and obviously dehydrated. I found a container and gave him what water I had. I identified the vehicle, contacted the ranger station and waited for help. I don’t know what happened after I left, but it brings up a point. From DJCline.com. Read the rest of this entry »
