I enjoyed the original TV series written by Buck Henry and Mel Brooks. Don Adams defined the role of Maxwell Smart. The James Bond films of the 1960s were so over the top that they cried out for ridicule. While Peter Sellers in Casino Royale and later Mike Myers as Austin Powers would parody the genre, Get Smart was more button-down biting satire. Text from DJCline.com.
My favorite moment was from a TV-movie remake where Barbara Feldon as Agent 99 and Max are chased through a library. Max grabs a book off the shelf and uses it as a shield to stop bullets. Text from DJCline.com.
Agent 99: That’s amazing! How did you know that book would stop a bullet?
Max: It was a copy of Tolstoy’s War And Peace. Nobody gets through War And Peace.
The movie with Steve Carrel and Hathaway has funny moments and some well done action scenes. The gadgets are great. The crossbow creates painful laughs. The poison dart has inevitable consequences. The stunt work is superb. Text from DJCline.com.
Max is bumbling but not incompetent. Agent 99 is more assertive. Alan Arkin hits his mark and delivers his lines. Duane “The Rock” Johnson makes a great super agent who needs anger management skills. There are two nerds who are obviously placed to attract younger audiences. Terence Stamp as the head of Kaos is perfect. Text from DJCline.com.
Don’t miss this by that much. Recommended.
