Five Hundred Year Flood

On CNN, I heard about an Iowa family who lost their home to a tornado last month only to lose their trailer to a flood this month. Experts call this a five hundred year flood. How can you tell if your home is on a five hundred year flood plain? All the houses are less than 499 years old. There is no way to avoid such a flood when buying a home.
