I enjoy meeting lots of people and hearing what they have to say. I know folks from all over the political spectrum, including libertarians. The irony of many libertarians is their disdain for bureaucracy and their encyclopedic knowledge of rules and regulations. Their coalitions never get big because they don’t want big. They always need money and never get elected. Text from DJCline.com.
L. Neil Smith is a science fiction writer. We have met on a couple of occasions. He was the only libertarian I’ve met who paid for his own meal. TANSTAAFL indeed. While I disagree with him on many issues, I think he has written some thought provoking books. He can create fascinating non-human characters, radically different plot settings and exotic nanotechnology. Here are a few of his books.
The Probability Broach
A Native American Denver police detective stumbles into an parallel universe with talking gorillas and dolphins. Everybody carries weapons, drives around in hovercraft and don’t pay taxes. In the back of the book there is a hilarious alternate timeline where an obscure Illinois lawyer shoots John Wilkes Booth.
The Nagasaki Vector
A time travel agent from the moon finds the same crazy universe as the Probability Broach.
Tom Paine Maru
The survivor of a botched interstellar mission is rescued by a ship that resembles an anarcho-syndicalist commune.
Their Majesties’ Bucketeers
A totally bizarre world where the most important members are firefighters.
Bretta Martyn
Smith’s second attempt at Sabatini space pirates. Not recommended.
