Beach Access

I keep running into people who want to sell me real estate.Text from DJCline.com

There seems to be no place to hide. I was on an island in the middle of the Pacific, standing near a cooling lava field. A black SUV pulls up and a real estate agent steps out and hands me her card.

She tells me I’m standing on one of the last bits of open beachfront property on the island. If I buy it I can keep all those ‘undesirables’ from going to the beach. By ‘undesirables’ I think she means the local indigenous poor people who supplement their diet with fresh seafood. Somehow I rate feeding people higher than unobstructed views or undisturbed surfing. I thank her and turn away feeling ill.

I get back in my car and talk to my friends, one of whom is an ‘undesirable’. A few weeks later the land is bought, put in a trust and gives unrestricted public beach access. Give a man a fish and he will eat today. Teach a man to fish and he will eat every day, providing he has beach access.
