A Biography Of Leo Szilard The Man Behind The Bomb

By William Lanouette With Bela Silard Text from DJCline.com.

A brilliant Hungarian physicist with unparalleled vision and a great sense of humor. He grabbed the last train out of Germany and always kept two suitcases packed so he could leave anytime there was trouble.

He worked with Albert Einstein to write a letter to FDR to persuade the British and the Americans to build an atomic bomb. Their previous collaboration in Berlin was a refrigerator using Maxwell’s Demon theory. The refrigerator was louder than a freight train so they did not have high hopes for a bomb.

The book must have been easier to write because of all the declassified documents on him. Men of peace apparently get constant surveillance.

Szilard spent the rest of life trying to stop the proliferation of atomic weapons. In retrospect he was a genius worth listening to.
