Television History Books

Since the era of broadcast television is going the way of the dinosaurs, I found these books useful when researching the period.Text stolen from DJCline.com.

Please Stand By: A Prehistory Of Television

By Michael Ritchie

This book covers the early development of television technology up to 1948. Getting it from the laboratory to the living room took twenty years. This seems to be how long it takes to roll-out any radically new technology. First the standards must be agreed upon and then developed by industry. Regulatory and business interests define the distribution and content. Finally the public has to adopt it. This book is instructive for anyone who thinks a truly new technology can make a mint overnight.

Total Television: The Comprehensive Guide To Programming From 1948 To The Present

By Alex McNeil

Well organized but basically a phone book directory of TV shows. Some analysis or reviews of the shows are pretty thin.

The Complete Directory To Prime Time Network And Cable TV Shows 1946 - Present

By Tim Brooks And Earle Marsh

A thick heavy tome of TV history. If you need to know showtimes, premises, characters or actors this will settle any trivial pursuit.
