If you watch the film The Great Escape, you will see them put together all sorts of gadgets to get out. Much of this was supplied by a secret military operation in Virginia to help POWs escape. Some of what they did violated the Geneva Convention and was classified for a long time until now.

Game boards concealed maps. Baseballs contained radio tubes. Playing cards held identity cards. Needles were magnetized to be used as compasses. Money was supplied to bribe guards. Lots of companies supplied products and services for free to aid their country in time of war. Imagine that.
