It seems no matter where we go we bring our problems with us.

Linden Labs is the virtual reality company that created those Linden Dollars avatars spend in Second Life. A few months ago they shut down gambling and this month they closed down banking. Apparently there were runs on virtual banks just like in the brick and mortar banks in the 1930s. It reminded me of the Frank Capra movie It’s A Wonderful Life where Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey tries to persuade his customers not to withdraw all their money from the bank. I thought I’d update it for virtual reality.

CUSTOMERS: We want our money!

BAILEY: Now wait just a minute here folks! Don’t you realize that your money is invested in everybody else? See Bob Crandall over there? The mortgage payments for his island helps pay for Steve Wilson’s jet pack rental. His money pays for Susan Petarsky’s leather corset shop.

CUSTOMERS: We STILL want our money!
