Steven Vedro grew up in New York City fascinated by radio and broadcast technology. He went on to Columbia University and a career in public broadcasting spearheading their digital initiatives. Along the way he became interested in meditation and Eastern philosophy. His latest book Digital Dharma is an attempt to compare the structures and meanings of technology and spirituality.
The term Dharma translates as duty or doing the right thing. To find out what to do you achieve various states of awareness. Vedro goes through all the levels of consciousness and there corresponding technologies. He seems to have carefully worked it all out the comparisons. Different technology creates different awareness. For instance, people can’t drive and talk on their cellphones because they are distracted by someone whispering in their ear. I don’t need a book to tell me that, I need drivers to put down their darn phones.
He’s a funny guy with great insights, but you won’t see me doing yoga anytime soon. If you see me folded up on the floor, I don’t need enlightenment. I need immediate medical attention.
