Golden Compass

I seldom go to theaters anymore but this movie is one reason to go. It is suitable for children and adults with critical thinking skills.

When someone tells me a movie is a fantasy, I automatically cringe. I have suffered through Lord Of The Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter and Stardust. I was not looking forward to the Golden Compass, but this one worked for me.

In a parallel universe people walk around with their animal alter egos. Children’s animals can change until they grow up. The bad guys are the Magisterium, a powerful group straight out of the Da Vinci Code who want to stop scientific inquiry into the mysteries of the universe.

At this point I should say that some conservative religious groups have objected to the portrayal of the Magisterium. In the movie they are accused of doing horrible things to kids, including separating them from their souls. Somebody must be really sensitive to criticism or lawsuits.

A little girl with a device that helps her see the truth is pursued by these guys. Along the way she meets, Egyptians in ships, witches on brooms, cowboys in balloons, and polar bears in armor. Of course there is a big battle at the end, but there is lots of room for sequels.

Controversy aside, I recommend you act out your free will and inquire into seeing this movie.

Did I mention it has Daniel Craig in it? The new James Bond.
