I know I’m supposed to be on the cutting edge using the latest technology, but in some ways I hold back.
Maybe it’s because I’m cheap. Maybe it’s because if something works I don’t want to fiddle with it. Someone asked me if I was going to upgrade my computer operating systems to Microsoft’s Vista or Apple’s OSX Leopard. I confessed I was in no hurry for either.
Invariably it means you must upgrade all your applications and peripherals, this takes time away from my busy schedule and could disrupt production. The Windows machines keep chugging away and are useful when working with companies that are more reluctant to upgrade their entire networks.
Macintoshes are different story. I wear Macs out before they can be upgraded. The ones that survive get by on their older operating systems. A friend asked me what operating system I was running on my oldest Mac.
“Leopard?” He asked.
“Uh, no.” I shrugged.
“Panther?” He seemed concerned.
“Mmm, no before that.” I was getting uncomfortable.
“Tiger?” He was incredulous.
“Nope. I think they called it Hello Kitty.”
Maybe it is time to upgrade.
