It was Halloween and I was literally at a low point… Death Valley. Then I saw this prototype.
It was high noon at the lowest piece of real estate in California without an adjustable mortgage. I was putting a new vehicle through the paces from about 9,000 feet above sea level to about 200 below on some seriously steep and twisted roads. I was getting some erroneous data and decided to take a break at the restaurant in Stovepipe Wells.
The parking lot had something I had not seen outside of Detroit, a half dozen prototype cars with Michigan manufacturer license plates. They were rigged up with that goofy camouflage gear so you can’t tell what it looked like. It’s a silly fan dance that corporations do where they put their product out in the public eye but cover it up. It was like they had dressed their cars in Halloween costumes. It just draws more attention. It certainly got mine as I pulled out my camera and started taking pictures. I am a member of the press and something was taking place on public property. You can still do that in America.
The two guys in the car decided it was time to go and took off. It should be noted that the cars were very very very quiet as the peeled out on the highway. Were they hybrids? Totally electric? Hydrogen? You look at the pictures and tell me.
I don’t know who they were but I wish them success. It lifted my spirits to see somebody trying something new. I’d be happy to buy a greener, cheaper car… without all the goofy stuff taped to it.
